Popeye the Sailor: 1933-1938, Vol. 1

This looks to be one of the best classic cartoon releases on DVD, and definately the best release of "Popeye the Sailor" so far. The cleanup looks really nice, and the quality looks preserved. The line work looks great and seems to maintain it's thick and thin strokes that made the characters so pleasing to look at in the first place. With lots of extra features including "Out of the Inkwell" shorts, commentaries by Jerry Beck and John Krisfalusi, Behind-the-toons featurettes, it looks like money well spent.

Check out these screen caps at Jerry Becks "Cartoon Research" Website.

Find out more on the History of "Popeye" including the original comic that inspired the animation, and the Stereoptical Process.

John Krisfalusi's "Popeye Rules"-John K provides some great insight and observations on Popeye.
